Nicole Champion is a normal teen living aboard the Ranger’s new space exploration ship, Zephyr. She endures bullies and gets in trouble like all the other kids. She and her brother, Simeon, and her best friend, Deitra, spend their free time together exploring the ship’s crawl spaces and researching the possible whereabouts of the missing Duke of Nodar. But then Simeon starts dating Deitra. Battling feelings of loneliness, Nichole spends time reading technical books while hiding in the crawl spaces.
The Ganen Gang is a large band of notorious space pirates that rule the galaxy with fear. They steal ships, enslave the crews, along with many other crimes, and unfortunately the government and the Rangers seem to be incapable of capturing Ganen and his gang. They killed Nicole’s birth parents as well as her first adoptive parents, which has led her to believe that the Gang is out to kill everyone she loves.
When some members of the Ganen Gang board Zephyr, Nicole must face her worst fears and soon everything is about survival.
Nicole Champion, who has been orphaned four times due to the Ganen Gang, joins the Rangers with the hopes of arresting Ganen and ending his tyranny. She must surmount issues on the job as well as overcome her personal problems. Before she can make her dreams come true, she must learn to trust her fellow officers, but that could also be her undoing.
After a mining accident sends Nicole’s adopted father, Peter Cook, cartwheeling through space, and right into the path of the notorious band of pirates, the Ganen Gang, he must overcome his fears and come to terms with a life of slavery, if he’s to help his fellow slaves. While he remains vigilant for an opportunity to escape, he makes a series of choices leading to events that will drastically change his life forever.

Ranger Nicole Champion wakes from cold sleep on the private star yacht, Freedom. Darren Kamp and his crew agree to take Nicole to Ranger Headquarters on Jahrl and then they give her a home when she resigns her commission. While she wrestles with her fear of loving others, the loss of her father, and her desire to arrest the notorious space pirate, Ganen, along with his gang, she makes a discovery that, once again, brings her face-to-face with her enemies. The ensuing faceoff between Ranger and Pirate is not only a battle between the forces of good and evil, but one of condemnation and redemption, and it places her new family in danger.
Will Nicole’s destiny be to bring Ganen’s tyranny to an end? Or are the risks too great?
